Filming Day 5

Today was the final day of shooting for my character, only reshoots with Megan left! The shoot was good, if a bit cold. We got all the shots that were storyboarded but allowed time for creativity on set too, which meant we got some shots that were unplanned, but worked well. Looking forward to editing all the new footage together and finally seeing the overall story in the editing timeline!

Bon Iver's Digipak - Analysis

Bon Iver is the artist we are using for our music video and here is the digipak for one of their albums. The design is simple and minimalist, which seems to be the theme for the artwork of indie digipaks in general. They've used artwork of nature, which is something I might want to take inspiration from when designing my digipak, given that our music video emphasises the contrast of rural and urban. The digipak also has 10 tracks on the back, in lower case font, to make the whole album appear more relaxed and "chill" than other albums, which is quite typical of the indie genre. The artist is not seen anywhere on the digipak, unlike with the digipaks for pop music albums.

Editing to the Beat

Today we worked on a bit more editing, specifically on making sure that our video is edited to the beat of the song. Below is an example of how we cut the clips so that the cuts aligned to the beats of the song.

Editing!

After Saturday's filming, we are making a lot of progress with the edit. We just need to film the final scene at Alexandra Palace, along with some shots of my character travelling and so over half of our edit is complete!

The timeline so far

We have chosen to use Premiere Pro over iMovie for our music video as music videos require precise cuts to the beat and Premiere makes it easier to achieve that, as it is the more powerful editing software. Furthermore, I have a better understanding of Premiere than I do iMovie as I used it on the BFI course and so wanted to use it.

What is a digipak?

A digipak is a form of packaging for CDs and DVDs. As opposed to the traditional jewel case packaging, digipaks are made from 300gsm card with matte or gloss varnish, which allows them to be shatterproof and show off the album artwork more than a clunky plastic case. In addition, there are not many restrictions on the size of a digipak as the number of panels can be easily increased from 4 to 6 or 8, which means that more information and artwork can be displayed on the packaging. This is more appealing to artists as it is more information to persuade the customer to buy their album.

Filming Day 4

Today was our fourth day of filming. We shot the footage of my storyline, wherein my character is on a date and is spotted by her parents. This leads to a confrontation and my character runs away. We also got some establishing and insert shots that would be able to set the scene and provide an urban contrast to the rural elements of Megan's storyline. We didn't get a vlog or any pictures of the filming, as we were working as efficiently as possible so we didn't lose light and because it was very cold.

Sick of Losing Soulmates - dodie

dodie's new music video to "Sick of Losing Soulmates" has been released and we would like to take inspiration from parts of it. Mostly, I love the cinematography and colour palette and would be hoping to use similar shots and colours in our music video. For example, we have now adapted the idea so that my character would be on a date and her parents would spot her. In that situation we would be looking to use shots similar to this one.
