Evaluation Questions

Here are the questions that I will need to answer for my evaluation. I am looking to retrieve audience feedback of my production in order to strengthen the evaluation and will do so at the showcase evening in March.

Starting the Digipak

I have chosen the first photo I will be using for my digipak. I think I will use a day/evening/night theme in my digipak, day on the front cover, sunset inside the digipak and night on the back. This both continues the use of contrast that was in the music video whilst also providing a fresh contrast that would be interesting to look at rather than re-using the urban/rural contrast from the music video. The day/evening/night also implies time passing and perhaps perspectives changing, which reflects the emotional journey the audience would be take on when listening to the album.

Colour Correction and Final Touches

Today we put some of the final touches to our music video and I applied what I had learnt at the BFI about colour correction, adding some contrast to the project in order to give it a more cinematic feel. Just a little bit more to go and then the music video is finished! Most of the colour is consistent throughout the piece and so we didn't feel that adding coloured undertones to the video was necessary. The changes in colour from warm to cold shows how the lives of the characters become more bleak as the narrative continues.

Nocturnal Animals and the Urban/Rural Contrast

I went to see Nocturnal Animals with a Q&A with director Tom Ford. The film as a whole is an intense thriller, with a fantastic turn from Aaron Taylor Johnson as an unhinged killer. It tells the story of Susan, an art collector, who is haunted by a novel written by her ex-husband (Jake Gyllenhaal) that is a thinly veiled revenge story and threat.

Set in both Los Angeles and the Texas desert a common motif used in the film is the contrast between rural and urban as the story switches from reality to the fictional world written by Jake Gyllenhaal's character. This is a parallel we are also using in our music video in order to make our intended meaning clear to the audience.
The urban Los Angeles, where Susan reads the novel her ex husband sends her

Rural Texas, where the characters of the novel exist

More Editing - again!

Today we edited in all of the footage that we shot on Day 5, as well as the pickups that Megan and JB had shot for Megan's storyline. It was a challenge to ensure that all the clips stayed on beat, but unlike with many music videos, we felt there wasn't a need for lots of fast paced cuts due to the slow and calming nature of the song. We decided to let the narrative lead the edit, rather than solely the beats of the song and the music video convention of fast editing. Only a few more finishing touches to go and then we're done!

The 1975 Digipak Analysis

The 1975 are a British indie pop band and the artwork below is for their second album "i like it when you sleep for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it"

One of the main things that sticks out to me is that, unlike with most cover art, there is no trackless on the outside of the cd case. This may be because the band want to remain mysterious about the contents of the album and think that the "brand" of them will sell the album well enough.

Another noticeable thing is the "The 1975" logo is the only thing on the front cover of the album. This logo is the same as it was on their first album, something that will help to sell the album to fans of their first album. But the logo has a difference in that it is created by pink neon light, whereas for the first album the logo was in black and white digital art. This could symbolise a change in style for the band, whilst keeping the essential parts of their identity.

The use of pink in the artwork complies with the band's image as their lead singer likes to defy gender stereotypes and so this is shown through the use of a traditionally "feminine" colour on their album artwork.

Much of the reason people will buy this album is because they know the band and have enjoyed their music before. This is because the artwork of the cd cover is based heavily around the logo of the band and so it appeals to their current fanbase.
